On Being Christian
Written by Rick Butler September 07, 2010
In 1974 theologian Hans Kuhn published a large volume entitled On Being a Christian. The colleague book group I was part of at the time selected it as one of our books to read.
It was a marvelous work. Although I might be able to remember some of Kuhn’s specific thoughts what has stayed with me all these years is the title.
What does it mean to be Christian? As we hold and practice our faith in this day and place what are the marks of being Christian? What do our sacred scriptures say to us about being Christian? Is the biblical definition different in any way from the cultural definition of being a Christian?
Starting Sunday, September 12 and ending Sunday, November 7 the focus of our worship: song, sermon, prayers will be on being Christian. I hope you will make every effort to be part of this weekly discernment about who we are as set apart people of faith known as Christian.
Grace and peace, Rick Butler
